Our approach

CIDT is committed to the eradication of poverty, inequality and injustice. We support local, national and international development partners to work towards this goal.  Whether at policy or community level, our approach is participatory, starting from where people are and helping them to develop practical steps for moving forwards.  Wherever possible, we use collaborative approaches that simultaneously encourage ownership and ensure social sustainable development.

Taking a comprehensive view of social development that places greater emphasis on the value of social justice and inclusion and gender equality, CIDT seeks to tackle inequalities, generate greater equity, amplify the voices of the most deprived and promote inclusion, resilience and accountability. CIDT also focuses on the pursuit greater gender equality internally; CIDT recognises the need to mainstream and embed  social justice and gender equality across internal policies,  practices and the thematic areas of forestry, climate change, education, MFDR and Agriculture.

CIDT services

Our contribution to Equality and Social Justice focuses on three main interlocking areas:

For the past twenty years, CIDT has worked to facilitate social, economic, environmental and political justice for women, which incorporates both practical action and gender transformative interventions. We believe that achieving gender equality is not only a prerequisite to a prosperous, resilient and equal society but essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. CIDT brings together efforts from various stakeholders and actors ranging from governments to indigenous groups to accelerate our commitment to gender equality.

Some of the services we offer include:

  • Supporting and conducting gender analyses, audits and appraisals
  • Supporting and strengthening the capacity of government departments and local and international NGOs to address gender-inequalities in formal and informal institutions
  • Strengthening the capacity of governments and NGOs to improve women’s rights and ensure gender is mainstreamed in all contexts and programmes
  • Capacity strengthening to mainstream gender in all stages of the project and programme cycle and in results-based management
  • Establishing and monitoring gender-sensitive indicators
  • Building gender transformational institutions
  • Conducting gender training and training of trainers

Social exclusion is both a cause and a consequence of poverty. It affects both those directly suffering discrimination, through denial of their rights and inability to access opportunities and development of their country as a whole. We believe incorporating the most marginalized and vulnerable into social and political structures enhances growth and community development. By strengthening the voices of the socially excluded and powerless we help citizens to influence policies and decisions that affect their lives.

Some of our key strategies include:

  • Supporting and creating structures and a safe space that allow voices of the most vulnerable to be heard
  • Ensure marginalised groups have opportunities and access to not just resources but also respected positions within society
  • Strengthening institutional capacity and processes with an emphasis on gender justice
  • Supporting the development and implementation of social protection mechanisms

CIDT facilitates engagement of community members, community based organisations, and local NGOs in various spheres, including natural resource governance, programme evaluation and gender inequality. We support empowerment of marginalised communities or groups, by strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations and indigenous people to actively participate in the decisions that affect their lives.

Some of our strategies include:

  • Support institutional reform and strengthen capacity of government at a local, national and international level to be both transparent and accountable
  • Strengthen, facilitate and support constructive interaction and dialogue between CSO’s, community groups and government departments.
  • Ensure and build grassroots capacity so that they have direct influence in decision making processes
  • Community engagement: design and operationalization
  • Conducting participatory appraisals and supporting community-driven monitoring
