Our approach

Our international expertise allows us to support our partners by drawing on global examples of best practice of what works in delivering effective adaptation and mitigation, and our grounding in participatory methodologies ensures that our solutions are locally relevant and appropriate to national needs and context.

CIDT provides support to designing and implementing national aims around climate change planning and related programmes and projects integrating climate resilience, green growth and poverty reduction. Our key work extends from facilitating the design of a national framework for coordination of activities around climate change, to accessing climate finance, including the establishment of a national basket fund, and coordinating capacity strengthening ,learning and scaling up ofmeasures for responding to climate change.

We work at different levels from national to local and have a people-centred, participatory approach to facilitating specific activities in support of countries’ own goals.

Our approach to national capacity strengthening is focused on three key areas:

  • Co-ordination of resources for addressing climate change issues;
  • Build organizational and institutional capacity to deliver across scales;
  • Train future climate compatible development specialists through curriculum reform.

CIDT services

Tailored national capacity strengthening programmes support operationalisation of plans, bringing together departmental and/ or cross-sectoral teams to focus on specific issues, fostering integrated approaches and communication of changes needed and planning and development of programmes of work.

We will use national developmental ambitions and priorities, our access to technical and sectoral expert information and our capacity strengthening experience to design, plan and implement appropriate and efficacious capacity strengthening programmes for CCD.

We can help you build an integrated approach towards green growth that is resilient and supports poverty reduction.

We can support you to map the gaps in policy and process, in positioning for accessing international finance, and help with strategic development and planning, and, linking the principles of CCD with existing policies, plans and programmes, supporting each stage with appropriate capacity strengthening to build national pools of expertise. We can do this through consultancy, mentoring and coaching and strategic planning programmes,

Using our access to expert information and capacity strengthening experience, we can develop competence in conducting climate risk and vulnerability assessments, evaluation of options for mitigation and adaptation and the design and formulation of nationally appropriate climate proofed development programmes.

We can help your mid-level officers develop, manage and sustain a steady pipeline of quality projects.

We can help sectoral mid-level staff translate policies, strategies and plans into implementable action based on local experience. We can facilitate climate sensitive sectoral planning and support to accessing funds (multi- lateral, bilateral or from national funding). . We can do this through professional development and training with follow up mentoring and coaching with the potential of online long-term support

We can develop competence in translating policies and strategies into national, sub-national and sector action plans and build capacity supporting their implementation, including the design of costed and log-framed CCD programmes and projects incorporating baseline and monitoring and evaluation indicators, and all aspects of project cycle management.

We can help your higher education institutions adapt and build curricula that are relevant to the climate management issues of the day in your country. We can do this through curriculum development programmes and peer lecturer training.

To ensure that your country has the technical expertise to address and deal with future climate change concerns, we provide technical assistance with curriculum review and will help your education sector to develop a curriculum that addresses climate change and other environmental issues. As a university department, we have experience in developing academic modules around climate change and can also provide training and mentoring of university teachers.
